Dry Eye in Midlife Women: More Than Just “Not Enough Tears”

Burning, grittiness, fluctuating blur, and constant watering may all be dry eye symptoms. Women often notice new eye symptoms during perimenopause or menopause, when hormonal changes can affect the tear film and oil-producing meibomian glands.

Dry eye is usually multifactorial. Screen use reduces blinking; air conditioning increases evaporation; contact lenses and some medications can worsen symptoms. Eyelid inflammation, rosacea, and meibomian gland dysfunction may reduce the healthy oil layer that keeps tears from evaporating. Ironically, an irritated surface can trigger reflex tearing, so watery eyes may still be dry eyes.

Support the tear film from several directions. Take screen breaks and practice complete blinking. Use a clean warm compress to loosen meibomian oils, keep eyelid margins clean, aim vents away from your face, and add humidity when needed. Stay hydrated and include fatty fish, walnuts, chia or flax in a balanced diet. Preservative-free artificial tears may help, but persistent symptoms warrant an examination because allergies, inflammation, infection and nerve-related pain require different approaches.
